## Overview
- [[Azure Backup]] uses Azure resources for both short-term and long-term storage, minimizing the need for physical backup media.
## Backup Types
- **On-premises**: Protect files, folders, and system state using the Microsoft Azure Recovery Services (MARS) agent, System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM), or Microsoft Azure Backup Server (MABS).
- **Azure Virtual Machines**: Back up entire VMs or specific files, folders, and system state.
- **Azure Files**: Back up Azure file shares.
- **SQL Server and SAP HANA in Azure VMs**: Back up databases running on Azure VMs.
## Storage Vaults
- **Azure Backup Vault**: Used exclusively with Azure Backup for data sources like Azure Database for PostgreSQL servers, Azure blobs, and Azure disks.
- **Azure Recovery Services Vault**: Supports Azure Backup and Azure Site Recovery for data sources like Azure VMs, SQL, or SAP HANA in Azure VMs, and Azure file shares.
## Considerations
- **Vault Organization**: Use separate vaults for Azure Backup and Azure Site Recovery, and consider how to organize vaults based on workload distribution.
- **Azure Policy**: Use Azure Policy for consistent backup policy settings across multiple vaults.
- **Role-Based Protection**: Secure vaults with Azure role-based access control (RBAC).
- **Redundancy**: Choose between locally redundant storage (LRS) and geo-redundant storage (GRS) for data replication.
